The world’s finest pepper production region and its origins is India. In medieval Europe, pepper was one of the daily necessities widely used to remove the fishy smell or prevent spoilage of food. At that time, pepper was not only valuable as a spice but also played a role as currency. When its value soared, it was possible to exchange 10 slaves for a fistful of pepper. When the only supplier of pepper, Islamic forces, cut off the supply, it triggered ‘Crusade’. Even Columbus left for India to look for pepper, not gold.
A ‘specialty pepper’ that grew up with the energy of a single local terroir.
Isn’t it as tempting as ‘specialty coffee’?
The western province of Mysore, about 240 km away from the capital of Bangalore in the Indian state of Karnataka. The ‘Azad Hind Estate’ farm is located in an unfamiliar place called, the Croog area of Western Ghats. It is a large area of approximately 56 hectares and the annual accumulated precipitation is 1,400 mm. it is noteworthy that Azad Hind Farm is growing ‘Robusta Coffee’ with ‘Mandarin (citrus)’ and ‘Pepper’. Due to this reason, the name of this farm that is in the depths of India was not so unfamiliar at all.
At Azad Hind Farm, coffee, pepper, and mandarin are grown under the shade that is created by the jungle of large trees, such as pomegranate, white cedar, red cedar, mahogany, and silver oak. In addition, all crops are grown by natural fertilizers made from coffee pulp and coconut power. We assume that coffee and pepper have more diverse aromas and tastes by growing various fruits and plants together.
Azad Hind Estate Farm was first established in the late 1940s by the independence activist ‘Mr.A.S.Chinnappa’ and it was named after the British, Mr. Williams. Currently, Mr.A.P.Uthappa is managing the farm.
Azad Hind means “Taste of Freedom”.
